Babyproofing a family home

A typical babyproofing visit for parents expecting their baby to start crawling soon: stair gates, furniture anchors, cupboard catches and window restrictors fitted in one go.

Babyproofing a family home

The job

Parents in Ashington often get in touch when their baby is starting to roll and they realise how much needs doing. In a typical house there is an open staircase with a turned banister, a tall bookcase and chest of drawers that could tip, kitchen cupboards full of cleaning products and upstairs windows that open wide. The parents have bought some of the safety products already but are not confident about fitting them securely.

What we did

We walk round the house with the parents and agree a list. At the top of the stairs we fit a screw-fixed gate, using an adapter kit to fix securely to the banister. A gate goes at the bottom too. Tall furniture is anchored to the wall with suitable fixings for the wall type. We fit catches to the kitchen and bathroom cupboards, finger guards to the main doors and restrictors to the upstairs windows.

The result

In one visit the main risks around the house are dealt with, and the parents can stop worrying about the stairs and furniture. We show them how each gate and catch works, and mention a few things to revisit as their child grows, such as blind cords and the garden gate latch. Having everything fitted at once means it is done properly before the baby is on the move.
