Bathrooms take more punishment than any other room in the house. Steam, splashes and daily use soon find the weak spots: a gap in the silicone behind the bath, grout that has gone dark, a cistern that hisses all night or a towel rail hanging off its plugs. Left alone, these small faults let water into walls and floors, and that is when a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.
Handyman Ashington is a family-run team that has been fixing homes around Ashington and the wider Wansbeck area since 2018. We handle the everyday bathroom repairs most people put off, and we can also refit a whole bathroom when the old one is past saving. Whether it is a compact downstairs bathroom in a colliery terrace or a new-build en-suite, we find the cause and fix it neatly. Plumbing-heavy jobs are covered in more depth on our plumbing page.
Bathroom jobs we take on

Most of our bathroom work falls into a few familiar groups. If your job is not listed, ask anyway; there is a good chance we have done something similar.
- Sealing and grouting: cutting out old mouldy silicone, cleaning back and re-sealing baths, shower trays and basins; raking out and regrouting tired tiles.
- Tiles: replacing cracked or loose tiles, fixing hollow-sounding tiles before they fall, and small areas of new tiling or splashbacks.
- Toilets and basins: fixing running or slow-filling cisterns, replacing seats, flush buttons and fill valves, and re-fixing loose pans and wobbly basins.
- Showers and taps: swapping shower heads and hoses, fitting new mixer taps and curing drips.
- Fixtures: putting up mirrors, cabinets, shelves, towel rails and grab rails securely, with the right fixings for the wall.
We can also strip out and refit a complete bathroom, coordinating any electrical work with a registered electrician.
How a bathroom repair usually goes

It starts with a phone call or a message through our contact form. Tell us what is wrong and, if you can, send a photo or two. For straightforward jobs such as re-sealing a bath that is often enough for us to give you an idea of cost and time before we visit.
On the day we protect the bath, floor and nearby surfaces before starting. With sealant, we remove every trace of the old bead, clean off mould and soap residue, and let the surface dry fully, because new silicone over damp or dirty edges will fail within months. Where tiles have lifted we check why first; a tile that keeps coming loose often points to a slow leak or a flexing wall behind it.
When we finish, we tidy up, take away the old fittings and tell you how long to leave the sealant before using the shower. If we spot anything else that needs watching, such as a corroded valve, we mention it rather than quietly ignoring it.
Signs it is time to call us
Plenty of bathroom problems give an early warning. Catching them at this stage usually means a quicker, simpler repair.
- Black spots in the sealant that come back however much you scrub.
- A brown stain or bubbling paint on the ceiling below the bathroom.
- Tiles that sound hollow when tapped or move slightly under pressure.
- A toilet that refills on its own every so often, which usually means a worn flush valve washer.
- A smell of damp in the room even when it has been aired.
- Grout that crumbles when you run a fingernail along it.
To keep a new seal looking good for longer, open a window or run the extractor fan after every shower, and wipe the bottom edge of the screen and tray now and again. If your extractor fan has stopped pulling air, it is worth replacing; a damp bathroom shortens the life of everything in it.

FAQs
Bathroom Repairs: your questions answered
How long does new sealant need before I can use the shower?
Most bathroom silicones need around 24 hours to cure properly, although some quick-curing products allow light use sooner. We will tell you the exact time for the sealant we use. Using the bath or shower too early can leave dents in the bead or stop it bonding, so a day's patience pays off.
Can you replace one cracked tile without retiling the whole wall?
Usually, yes. We carefully cut out the damaged tile and the grout around it, then fit a replacement. The tricky part is matching, so if you kept any spare tiles from when the room was done, dig them out. If not, we can help you find the closest match or suggest a feature tile that looks deliberate.
Do you fit complete new bathrooms?
Yes. We can remove the old suite, make good the walls and floor, and fit the new bath or shower, toilet, basin, tiling and accessories. Any new electrical work, such as a shower or lighting circuit, is carried out or signed off by a registered electrician. We are happy to help you plan the layout first.
My shower tray leaks at the edge. Is it just the sealant?
Often it is, but not always. A tray that flexes when you stand in it will keep breaking the seal, and a failed waste joint can also leak at the edge. We check for movement and test the waste before re-sealing, so the fix lasts instead of failing again a few weeks later.
Can you fit a grab rail for an elderly relative?
Yes. We fit grab rails beside toilets, baths and showers, plus rails by the front door or on the stairs. The key is a solid fixing, so we find out what the wall is made of and use the right plugs or a backing board for plasterboard. Tell us who will use the rail and we will position it at a sensible height.
