Handyman testing wiring before replacing a household electrical fitting

Plenty of electrical jobs around the house are small: a dated pendant you want swapped for something brighter, a cracked socket faceplate, a bathroom fan that has given up. They are too minor for most electricians to fit in quickly, yet they still need to be done safely and properly. Our handymen take on this kind of minor work across Ashington and nearby villages.

We are careful about where our work ends. In England, electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. Certain jobs, such as adding new circuits, replacing a consumer unit or most new work in bathrooms, are notifiable and must be carried out by, or signed off by, a registered electrician. We focus on minor, non-notifiable jobs like like-for-like replacements, and where your job needs more, we will tell you and arrange it with a registered electrician.

Small electrical jobs we handle

Light switch faceplate being replaced with a screwdriver

Typical minor work includes:

  • Replacing ceiling lights and wall lights on an existing circuit
  • Swapping sockets and light switches like-for-like, including faceplate upgrades to chrome or brass
  • Fitting dimmer switches where the fittings are compatible
  • Replacing an existing extractor fan with a new one
  • Fitting outdoor wall lights to an existing outside supply
  • Changing fused spurs and cooker switch plates
  • Fixing loose sockets and replacing damaged back boxes
  • Mounting fittings such as doorbells and smoke alarms

If you are not sure which side of the line your job falls, describe it when you get in touch and we will give you a straight answer. We would always rather explain the rules than take on work that should be certified.

How we keep the work safe

Outdoor garden lights illuminating a path and planting at dusk

Every job starts with isolating the circuit at the consumer unit and testing that it is dead before anything is touched. We check the condition of the existing wiring as we go. If we find signs of overheating, very old cabling or no earth where there should be one, we stop and explain what we have seen rather than simply fitting a new accessory on top of a problem.

Once fittings are installed we restore power, test them and show you everything is working. Where a job turns out to be notifiable, such as a brand new circuit for a garden room or new sockets in a bathroom zone, the work is done by, or certified by, a registered electrician so that you receive the right paperwork for building control and for selling your house in future.

When to call a registered electrician

Some signs point to a problem in the wiring rather than a single fitting. Call a registered electrician promptly if you notice:

  • A burning smell, scorch marks or warm faceplates
  • Trip switches or RCDs that keep going off
  • Lights that flicker across several rooms
  • Buzzing or crackling from sockets or switches
  • An old fuse box with rewireable fuses

These need proper testing and should not be left. For smaller tasks, keeping a note of the bulb types and fittings you like makes our visit quicker. Many customers combine minor electrical work with other jobs, such as odd jobs or a kitchen refresh. If you are buying an older house, an electrical condition report from a registered electrician is a sensible first step.

FAQs

Electrical: your questions answered

Are you electricians?

We are handymen who carry out minor, non-notifiable electrical jobs such as like-for-like replacements of fittings, switches and sockets. Notifiable work under Part P, like new circuits or consumer unit changes, is carried out by, or signed off by, a registered electrician.

What is notifiable electrical work?

Under Part P of the Building Regulations in England, notifiable work includes installing a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit and most new work in a bathroom's special zones. It must be done by a registered electrician or inspected by building control, and you receive a certificate.

Can you add an extra socket?

Adding to an existing circuit can sometimes be minor work, but it depends on the circuit, the location and its condition. Tell us where you want it and we will advise. If it needs a new circuit or is in a special location, a registered electrician will handle it.

Can you replace my bathroom fan?

Replacing an existing fan like-for-like in the same position is usually minor work we can do. Fitting a fan where there has never been one, or moving it into a different zone, may be notifiable, so we would arrange that through a registered electrician.

Do I need to buy the light fittings myself?

You can choose and buy your own fittings, which many customers prefer, or we can source them for you. Check they suit the ceiling height and bulb type you want, and that fittings for bathrooms carry a suitable IP rating.
