Handyman repairing pipework under a kitchen sink with a wrench

Most plumbing problems in the home start small. A tap that drips through the night, a toilet cistern that never quite stops filling, a damp patch under the kitchen sink. Left alone, they waste water, stain fittings and can quietly damage floors and ceilings. Our handymen repair and fit domestic plumbing across Ashington and the nearby towns and villages, dealing with these jobs quickly and tidily.

We are clear about what we do. Our plumbing work covers taps, toilets, showers, sinks, waste pipes, small leaks and appliance connections. We do not carry out gas or boiler work of any kind; for that you need a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your problem turns out to involve your heating system or boiler, we will tell you straight away so you can call the right person.

Plumbing jobs we carry out

Chrome tap dripping water into a sink before a washer is replaced
  • Taps: replacing washers and cartridges, or fitting new kitchen and basin taps
  • Toilets: fixing running cisterns, replacing fill and flush valves, new seats and close-coupled pans
  • Showers: resealing trays, replacing heads, hoses and riser rails, and tracing leaks
  • Sinks and basins: replacing traps and wastes, clearing slow drains
  • Appliances: plumbing in washing machines and dishwashers
  • Leaks: repairing weeping joints and compression fittings on accessible pipes
  • Isolation valves: fitting valves so fixtures can be shut off individually

Larger bathroom jobs are covered on our bathroom repairs page. We are just as happy to deal with one dripping tap as a list of several fixtures, and booking them together usually saves you time.

What happens on a plumbing visit

Toilet cistern open for repair of a leaking flush valve

When you call, we ask a few questions about the problem and, where possible, a photo of the tap, cistern or fitting. That helps us bring the right washers, cartridges or valves so the job can be finished in one trip.

On arrival we turn off the water at the nearest isolation valve or stopcock, lay down towels and get to work. We find the source of the leak before replacing anything, because water can travel a long way along a pipe before it drips. Once the repair is done we turn the supply back on, check for leaks under pressure and run the fixture so you can see it working. Any old parts are taken away and the area is left dry and clean.

Know your stopcock

The single most useful plumbing tip is knowing where your stopcock is and checking it turns. In many Ashington terraces it sits under the kitchen sink; in newer homes it can be in a utility room, a downstairs cloakroom or under the stairs. If it is seized, we can replace it.

Other good habits that prevent bigger problems:

  • Fix a dripping tap promptly; it rarely gets better on its own.
  • Check under sinks every few months for damp or swollen cabinet bases.
  • Lag pipes in lofts, garages and outside walls before winter.
  • Keep fats and wipes out of drains.
  • Renew tired shower sealant before water gets behind tiles.

If unsightly pipes are left after a repair, we can also box in the pipework.

FAQs

Plumbing: your questions answered

Do you work on boilers or gas appliances?

No. We do not carry out any gas or boiler work. Anything involving gas must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We focus on water-side repairs and fittings such as taps, toilets, showers, wastes and appliance connections. If we spot a gas issue, we will advise you to call an engineer.

Can you stop my toilet from running?

Usually, yes. A constantly running toilet is normally caused by a worn flush valve seal or a faulty fill valve. We identify which part has failed, replace it and adjust the water level so the cistern fills and stops properly. It is usually a quick repair finished in one visit.

My shower leaks through the ceiling below. Can you help?

We can trace the source, which is often failed sealant, cracked grout or a leaking waste. We repair the cause and reseal the tray. If the ceiling below needs patching once it has dried out, we can arrange that too. Acting early stops the water damage spreading further.

Can you fit a tap I have bought online?

Yes. Before buying, check whether your sink has one or two tap holes and whether the tap suits your water pressure. Some taps need high-pressure systems. Send us the product details if you are unsure and we will check compatibility before you order.

Do you handle emergencies like burst pipes?

Turn off the stopcock first and call us. If we can attend, we will repair accessible pipework. We do not promise set response times, so in a serious leak, shutting off the water quickly is the most important step you can take.
